I was just wondering what could be the ideal definition of “THE BEST” HR Manager..What qualities should an individual possess so that he can qualify to be called as one of the most efficient People Manager..I was just thinking on that terms when I saw the movie Faltu…and guess what I have a nice new FALTU MANAGER who you could term as THE BEST PEOPLE MANAGER!!

Explanation
- Fairness and Firmness
Fairness means transparency in dealings. The HR Manager represents his/her company. So it is vital for him/her to be perceived as fair.
Firmness does not mean arrogance. Firmness is required so that softness is not taken for granted. One of the Managers in Wipro says ‘Its all about being soft but firm together’
-Attention to Details
Details could be factual details relating to employee, confidential data or even behavioural aspects of subordinate(s). E.g. If a subordinate has edited the name of the candidate as ‘ Gunjan’ whereas the spelling is ‘Goonjan’ as per the records. Careless Attitude or lack of attention to details can lead to wastage of hours.
Also, a Manager needs to be careful about what data is to be shared with whom
-Long Term Perspective
An HR Manager is expected to think from long term perspective. E.g. A Talent Acquisition Manager knows well in advance how many candidates he will require after X months on the basis of his/her experience and calculations
-Tact
The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time at the right place but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment
-Understand the right timing
This is where the key lies. E.g. A candidate X from an outstation location insists that company Y should bear his expenses for interview (prior to his selection). Considering the requirement and timing, the HR Manager may approve his request or reject it. It depends upon the recruitment situation prevailing at that point of time in the organization
-Manage with Commitment
An HR Manager acts as a Role model. If he is not committed, this leaves a bad impact on his subordinates and the negativity spreads on
-Academic Qualification
Every organization has its own requirement and managing becomes a challenge if the person fails to understand the environment. An MBA in HR from a reputed institute is assumed to have some idea about corporate environment prior to joining the company. Also, he understands the mindset of people and what they face at work applying some of the theories into practice
-Negotiation Skills
Negotiation is an art that one develops with time and experience. Negotiation by an HR manager may be done during issuing an offer to a selected candidate, retaining a good old employee who has made up his mind to resign. He needs to use his tongue very carefully as it can make or break the fate of efforts put in
- Appropriate Decision Making
Decision Making is a way of reconciling desirable and realizable leadership, planning and governance. A smart HR Manager follows LPG Model of Decision Making:
L- Leadership
P- Planning
G- Governance
- Good as a Human Being
Action speaks louder than words. This is what separates a (9,9) from a (9,1) leader. Now, this does not mean that an HR Manager should be good with everyone every time. Here, the character of the person matters as this reflects in his work as well
- HereHExcellence = Big Picture + Small Actions
A good HR Manager holds himself responsible for the standards than anybody’s expectations. He certainly cannot ignore the small actions as they result into big consequences either good or bad. E.g. Sourcing CVs is the simplest activity in Recruitment. But if ignored, the entire process cannot proceed further
- Resourcefulness
In Layman language, resourcefulness is the ability to find a way. This comes from continuous implementation of self discipline, optimism, competitiveness and initiatives taken. He is also supposed to be good at social networking.
