Difference between Training and Development
Training refers to the planned effort by a company to facilitate employee’s learning of job related competencies.
Development refers to gradual advancement or growth through a series of progressive changes.

Forces influencing Training
– Globalization: The world is flat and is said to be a global village. Gone are the days when we used to trade mutually within the country. Now companies engage in business globally to make profits. More the globalization, more is the workforce required that has global competence. E.g. A healthcare company in India may send its employees to US for Training
– Ideology: The ideology of the company matters the most. This is because for some companies Training is an unnecessary cost and many companies tend to cut on it during bad times i.e. recession. However, Training during such turbulent times should be very specific rather than completely eradicating it
– Leadership: The world today is going through leadership crisis. Some companies have come up with leadership development programs and is working wonders for them. E.g. A leding hotel chain in Mumbai encourages its employees to go beyond the call of duty by providing them training for 8 to 9 months
– Economic Conditions: The market is subject to change. What was being done a year ago may not be applicable today. The same rule applies to Training as well. If the industry is going through despair, training is most likely to take a back seat and if that industry is booming, training will be a priority. E.g. Cement industry is expected to grow 10% in next one year. This will impact the way training is imparted internally
– Strategy: Strategy is where you are and where you want to reach and how will you do so. Training concentrates on ‘How’. E.g. If a doctor says the strategy to overcome the disease is combination of medicines. The employees of that pharmaceutical company will wonder how is it possible. Training answers How?
